ActivityOwner.Com add-in updates

I just wanted do a quick “two-minute action” post on some updates to add-ins on the site over the past few weeks. Most have been discussed in the comments but merit an announcement. Post below if you have questions or are experiencing any problems or just want to let me know you still use the tools!

Map2Excel has some new functionality. It now can export pictures from MindManager to Excel. If you activate the option, and a topic has an imbedded or linked image, the image can then be transferred to an Excel cell and/or comment. This was very useful to one particular user who wanted to take pictures in the field and organize them via a map prior to transferring to Excel.

The legacy MindReader for GyroQ, which is also used by Outlinker, had a bug that caused it to continually prompt for the autosave option to be set. Not sure how that persisted but it was probably only triggered by new users. The latest setup should have this fixed now.

As Windows, MindManager, and Outlook versions have proliferated, it has become hard to have a simple install for OutLinker. You may run into a problem where it doesn’t run upon install and may need to go in and set some a reference to Microsoft Office Object Library manually. Comment below or send email to info@activityowner.com if you run into trouble.

MarkTaskComplete had a bug in its upgrade-checking code that was causing a problem. It is fixed in latest version.

The MindReader ribbon add-in had a bug that was preventing it from installing a configuration map for new users. It aslo had some bugs and problems with its bottons and popup labels. It has been updated.

The Omni2Map link for the MindManager 2012 version I’ve just learned has been broken for awhile. It is now fixed.

Again, if you run into any problems, post a comment on any article (ideally a relevant one) and I’ll try to address it. You can also send email to info@activityowner.com.

Do you know of any way to use results manager with Mindjet 2012? I know Gyronix is having Mindjet look at it, but it seems to me that Mindjet wants everyone to use Cohuman. So, they seem to be delaying???

Cohuman takes you out of mindjet with no easy way to get tasks back into mindjet.

Hi Daniel — Because I need to keep 8,9, and 2012 on my system in order to compile add-ins, I’ve been able to use 9 for ResultsManager and haven’t gone looking for the 2012 version.

There is a beta version that I understand from a message on the GTD_MindManager Yahoo group has some stability problems for large dashboards. If you email support@gyronix.com I’m sure you can get your hands on it.

Note that I needed to upload a more updated version of the “Mindreader for GyroQ” setup (setup169.exe) after this post, so if you happened to grab 168 right away, head back for the update.

    Hello Everyone,

Macros and Add-ins from this site are very useful and, I believe, help to so many users of MindManager. I really like that Gyronix thinks about its main products could use not only English-speaking users. Both GyroQ and ResultsManager have language files, which can be translated to any other language. That is great.

Macros are also very easy to localize through macro editor. And it’s very good. Especially for MindReader, which is a very powerful extension for GyroQ.

But starting this year (or more precisely, starting with MindManager 2012) all Activityowner developers became starting with add-ins instead of macros. Of course, there are many advantages of this solution, but there are also some disadvantages.

One of them is that these add-ins now can use only English-language users. It’s much more difficult localize DLL file than the macro.

So, my suggestion – how about to add file like AddinName-Language.mmbas to each add-in (as is done in GyroQ and ResultsManager)?

So, the developer would be grateful not only from British and North Americans users, but also Spanish, German, Russian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Arabs, Brazilians and many others!

    Your opinion?

With respect and great appreciation to all Activityowner developers,

    Sergio Ross (Spanish user)

    Hi

Gyronix seem very quiet these days, I’m having my regular gtd bankrupcy periods and beggining to wonde rif an alternative to MM and RM would be prudent.

Mindjet seem to using the magic word “Cloud” alot as well which makes me wonder were the application and its data is going.

I need lists but grpahical lists, tried lots of apps and prcedures but nothing yet.

    Regards

    Rob

Hi Rob — Gyronix seems to continue to support existing products to the best of their ability but new versions of MindManager can make that difficult as the API evolves.

I bought ResultsManager in 2006. I don’t think there is any software package I’ve gotten as much use of for the money given their policy of free upgrades.

At work I went to paper for awhile, but recently have been doing bulk outlinker dumps from outlook inbox to mindmanager in order to sort out projects and next steps, but the dashboard refresh process still adds too much friction to the process though so we’ll see if it lasts.

At home I switched to Omnifocus on ipad for the past several months with some success but data entry with index fingers is a bit slow. Its great for processing away from pc, but at pc feels too slow.

Right now I’m experimenting with a filtered google spreadsheet list. Its not graphical or as “next action” automated as other tools, but its readily accessible from ipad and computer and easy to customize and tailor to my needs.

Perhaps we could reactivate the blog and see what can be done collaboratively with designing a google spreadsheet approach? I can share what I’m doing if folks are interested.

Hi Sergio — I didn’t consider the language issue when developing the add-ins. The big advantage of the add-ins was the use of the ribbon toolbar. The old tools are still available as “Mindreader for GyroQ” and on the wiki.

The add-ins don’t use any mmbas files. I could look for the text fields in the interface and have them be configurable or incorporate the text for major languages (with some help from colaborators here).

I’m not sure at this point if there is enough use/interest in the tools to justify the effort. If folks could comment or email me showing enough interest, I’d have a look at it.

    Hi Activityowner,

I still think that it’s possible to make a language file for any add-in. After all, some add-ins do it. For example, I know this ones: Decision Mil, JCV Gantt, GyroQ. In the installation folder of these add-ins there are either language.ini, or language.mmbas, which are responsible for localization.

But, perhaps, I do not consider something…

In any case, I’ll be happy to help with add-ins localization. If there are text fields for add-ins, I can translate them to Russian and Spanish (I’m half-Russian, half-Spanish:))

    Thanks!

It can be done — I would probably just hard code it into the software or create an option box with defaults. Which application would you want to start with?

Thank you, AO! I would start with Mark Task Complete and MindReader.
